The Impact Report: Summer 2023

Join us for a roundup of our most recent investigations spurring impact and real-world change.

Impact has been at the heart of ProPublica’s mission since we began publishing nearly 15 years ago. Our reporters dig deep into corruption and breaches of the public trust, knowing that a sustained spotlight on injustice has the power to spark real-world change.

In this free, virtual event, we’re inviting you to hear directly from ProPublica reporters about how some of our recent investigations came to be — and what happened after publication. Go behind the scenes of:

  • Our investigation into the decadeslong relationship between Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and Texas real estate billionaire Harlan Crow. The report prompted lawmakers to call for an investigation and ethics reforms.

  • “The Repatriation Project,” an extensive investigation revealing that America’s institutions maintain control of more than 100,000 remains of Native Americans, despite a 1990 law meant to return them to tribal nations. The Senate has since probed top universities over their failures to repatriate these remains, and a sweeping repatriation reform bill unanimously passed the Illinois House of Representatives.

  • A ProPublica-New Yorker investigation exposing the way a visionary hospice movement became a for-profit hustle. Mounting pressure pushed the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to reform how it inspects hospice providers.

  • ProPublica’s “Stillbirths” series, a 2023 Pulitzer Prize finalist in the explanatory reporting category. The investigation examines the lack of comprehensive attention and action that has contributed to a stillbirth crisis in the U.S.

Join us for this virtual program moderated by ProPublica Editor-in-Chief Stephen Engelberg to hear firsthand from the reporters who brought these investigations to light and to ask your questions.

Speakers include:

  • Justin Elliott, ProPublica reporter
  • Mary Hudetz, ProPublica reporter
  • Logan Jaffe, ProPublica reporter
  • Josh Kaplan, ProPublica reporter
  • Ava Kofman, ProPublica reporter
  • Charles Ornstein, ProPublica managing editor, local
  • Robin Sparkman, ProPublica president
